Being Responsible for your Safety While at Work

As an employee, are you up to date with how MS workers comp functions in your place of work? Do you understand your rights and responsibilities as an employee in being part of a safe work environment? 

While it is your employer’s responsibility to provide you and your colleagues with a safe workplace; employees also have responsibilities. In taking some responsibility for your own well being and that of your colleagues, you’ll be making a contribution to workplace safety. Your contribution might include:

- Being aware of (and adhering to) safety procedures and the correct operating procedures for any equipment you operate;
- Following safety procedures including any requirement to wear protective clothing such as safety shoes, safety vests, goggles, gloves and the like;
- Reporting any hazards you notice (such as a spill, faulty appliance or unsafe work practices) to a supervisor or the person responsible for workplace safety so that appropriate action to prevent injury can be taken.

In larger workplaces, employees who take an active interest in workplace safety may be able to make a greater contribution by becoming involved in the safety committee. 

MS workers comp

exists to provide employees with financial assistance if they are injured at work. However, the responsibilities have to be shared between employers and workers if a workplace is to be as safe as possible.
