Strategies for Maintaining Safe Work Places

As an employer, you are required to do everything you can to ensure you provide a safe working environment. You also, if you employ over the minimum number of staff governed by local regulations, need to have MS workers comp coverage. However, this coverage should be regarded by you and your employees, as back up – something you can access should the worst happen, and someone is injured.

Your focus should be on creating and maintaining that safe work place, and providing training for your staff so that they are aware of safety protocols and familiar with their responsibilities in contributing to a safe environment.

Regular safety drills are important – if you have a fire or some other emergency, it is important that everyone knows what to do and where they should be. When you carry a large number of staff members, you should appoint section heads who are responsible in an emergency for marshaling everyone in their section to a safe exit.

Safety training is particularly important if your business involves the use of dangerous machinery and/or volatile substances or chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment should be mandatory. Instituting penalties for violations that compromise everyone’s safety might provide some incentive for everyone to comply with safe practices.

MS workers comp is a vital part of your insurance package, but it is not a solution for a poorly managed workplace that risks people’s safety. You must be proactive and do everything you can to ensure the safety of your workers and all others on your premises.
